Why format matters
Formats store stitch data differently. Some keep color information cleanly; others are more universal but may need manual color assignment at the machine. Using a native format for your machine is usually safer than converting every file yourself.
Common embroidery formats
PES
Widely used with many home embroidery machines. Often a convenient choice when a pack includes PES because color stops are commonly preserved well for home use.
DST
A long-standing commercial-style format. Very common and portable, but color information may be limited, so you may assign thread colors manually.
JEF
Common with Janome-family workflows. If your machine expects JEF, prefer the JEF file from the pack instead of converting from another format when possible.
EXP / XXX / VP3 / hus / other
These appear in many multi-format packs for specific machine families. The rule is simple: if your machine manual lists a native format, choose that file first.
How to choose the right file from a ZIP
- Open the pack and locate your machine’s native extension.
- Confirm the size/version matches your hoop.
- Keep the original ZIP as backup before renaming files.
- Transfer with USB, Wi‑Fi app, or the method your machine supports.
Quick tip: If a pack includes both a stitch file and a PDF/color chart, keep them together. The chart helps you match thread shades even when the format has limited color data.
Should you convert formats?
Conversion tools can help, but they are not magic. Dense designs, specialty stitch types, or complex colorways can change during conversion. Whenever a pack already includes your format, use that original file.
