When a stitch-out goes wrong, guesswork wastes fabric. Use this checklist to isolate the real cause—setup, consumables, or design density—quickly.
Birdnesting (thread bunching underneath)
- Re-thread the top path with the presser foot raised.
- Check bobbin insertion and bobbin tension basics.
- Confirm the design is not starting with an untrimmed thread tangle.
Repeated thread breaks
- Replace the needle.
- Check for old/dry thread or a bad spool path.
- Slow the machine slightly on dense areas.
- Inspect for burrs on the needle plate or hook area.
Puckering or tunneling
- Use firmer stabilizer for the fabric type.
- Avoid over-stretching fabric while hooping.
- Choose lower-density designs for lightweight fabrics.
- Add a light basting box to keep layers together.
Poor registration (outlines not lining up)
- Re-hoop more securely; fabric may have shifted.
- Use cutaway on unstable fabrics.
- Avoid floating thick stacks without enough support.
- Make sure the hoop is fully locked into the arm.
Ugly or fuzzy fill stitches
- Add topping on towels/fleece.
- Verify you are using embroidery thread, not general sewing thread.
- Check that the design density matches the fabric.
Quick tip: Always test fixes on scrap with the same fabric + stabilizer combo. Changing three variables at once makes it hard to learn what actually worked.
